Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study suggests that patients who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these drugs need to be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle support.
