This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.
We present a dare for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.
A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love
Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.
The plot begins when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.
The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.
Nuanced Portrayals
A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.
Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.
Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.
Thematic Depth
While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on right now.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
