A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
